Mon 26 Mar 2012—Advice on Spring-Flowering Bulbs and Abnormally Warm Spring Weather
The unusual warm temperatures have been putting a lot of stress on various plants including bulb plantings such as hyacinths, tulips and daffodils this spring. Symptoms of this warmth-related stress include: — Plants blooming on shorter-than-normal stems — Flowers which are smaller than normal — Flower and/or foliage tips which appear burned — Plants blooming earlier then normal
There is little that can be done other then to make sure that these plantings have plenty of moisture. Adequate moisture will aid the fast pace of growth and extend the blooming season.
Mon 12 Mar 2012—Statement by SRN on Boxwood Blight (Cylindrocladium pseudonaviculatum)
To ensure that South Riding Nurseries (SRN) in no way contributes to the spread of Boxwood Blight (Cylindrocladium pseudonaviculatum) by selling potentially infected plants, we have destroyed all Buxus acquired prior to 1 January 2012. SRN was inspected in 2011 by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) and all inspected boxwoods were found to be free of Boxwood Blight. SRN will continue to only purchase boxwoods from reputable vendors that have been inspected and approved by their respective state agenc(y/ies). We will be more than happy to produce a certificate of inspection to any customer that may have a concern. We will also continue to monitor and inspect all new stock both upon arrival and at our vendors when doing our normal vendor inspections and tours. SRN will continue to follow all best management practices to keep all boxwood inventory healthy and disease free.
