Robinson River Nursery

Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Madison County, Virginia, Robinson River Nursery specializes in growing landscape-size specimen trees. Our first crop was planted in the spring of 1990 and we have been expanding ever since. The nursery has a loamy clay soil that is perfect for producing exceptional root balls that readily transplant into most Virginia landscapes. The entire nursery is watered by drip irrigation allowing material to thrive in a stress-free environment with very little insect control needed and while keeping root growth more condensed. All material is machine-dug by a local professional digging company, based on pre-booked and custom tagged orders.

Over the years Robinson River Nursery has invested much of its inventory into Ilex opaca (American Holly)—primarily the ‘Satyr Hill’ and ‘Miss Helen’ cultivars that have proven to be two of the best growers for the Mid-Atlantic area. These plants are installed from #1-size containers and are mulched and staked from initial planting. They are then pruned twice a year by hand, promoting a dense conical shape with a single strong central leader and branched fully to the ground. With only an average of one foot of growth per year these plants are truly an investment by the time they reach market size of 8’. We currently have 1,000 American Hollies in the ground ranging in size from 18” to 14’.

Robinson River Nursery also grows numerous other plants including Styrax, Stewartia, Cryptomeria, Cornus kousa, Æsculus, Chamæcyparis, Nyssa, Thuja, Cercis, Fagus, Chionanthus, Magnolia, Picea pungens ‘Fat Albert’ and Acer japonicum and palmatum cultivars. All material is spaced and pruned to allow for full heavy specimens to develop with some assistance from shaping and staking when and where needed.

We have exclusively teamed with South Riding Nurseries as our distributor for all of our material. We have found that South Riding Nurseries’ client base is a perfect fit for our material and we have enjoyed our unique and mutually beneficial relationship since its establishment in 2001. Please contact South Riding Nurseries if you have questions about availability, price, and terms or would just like to tour Robinson River Nursery.
